Genealogy Messages

In Genesis chapter 5, the first genealogy from Adam is shown and we find that Noah’s grandfather’s name means “His death shall bring”. Interesting because one can do the math of the ages and see that just after Methuselah dies, the flood comes. But it gets even more interesting if one looks at the literal meaning of every name in this genealogy leading up to Noah.

Enoch Teaching, Trained, Dedicated, or Disciplined

Methuselah His death shall bring

Lamech The Despairing

Noah Rest, or comfort.

The message that may be in this genealogy is: “Man Appointed Mortal Sorrow; The Blessed God Shall come down Teaching (or Dedicated). His death shall bring The Despairing Rest, or comfort.” It is clearly a parallel summary of what the overall Word says about God's plan of redemption as described clearly in the New Testament.

Could it be that this seemingly boring genealogy reveals an author who knows the future and enjoys leaving clues for us to discover? Could it be that God laid out His plan for redeeming mankind thousands of years beforehand in the first few chapters of Genesis?
